Apple Crumble Recipe: How to Make the Best Apple Crumble
Bramley apples are the best apples for cooking because of their balance between sugar and acid.
However, you can prepare this recipe using other apples but avoid the really hard varieties such as the Granny Smith.
We prefer not to peel the apple skin since it does not affect the taste or even the texture significantly.
Additionally, they look appealing especially if you are using apples with a pinkish hue.
Ingredients
- 4 eating apples, peeled, quartered and cored
- 2 Bramley cooking apples, peeled, quartered and cored
- ¼ (50 g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon topping
- 150 g plain flour
- 100 g golden caster sugar
- 50 g flaked almonds
- 100 g butter, cut into cubes
Method
- Firstly, preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Then, put all the apples in an ovenproof dish; add the sugar and cinnamon and mix.
- Secondly, to make the topping, mix the flour and caster sugar in a bowl, then add the butter and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingertips.
Please note that the mixture should have the texture of coarse breadcrumbs. Add the flaked almonds and mix well.
- Thirdly, sprinkle the topping over the apples and bake the crumble in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- Lastly, serve with cream or custard.
