The Vikings were popular for their sea-faring competences.
What I find so captivating is that most of their history was conveyed by oral tradition.
Their staple was bread and soup or broth and gruel (grain-based porridge).
Viking Brown Bread Recipe
Good as a snack to be consumed warm from the oven and drizzled with honey
This Viking Bread is the perfect garnish to Viking grilled lamb kebab. It is simple enough that kids can help out and quick to bake on any weeknight.
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 cups of water
- ¾ cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup rolled oats {for sprinkling on top}
- 1 tsp. salt
Instructions
- Firstly, mix all dry ingredients and then add water. After that, stir all of the ingredients thoroughly with a wooden spoon
- Secondly, combine the dough very well
- Thirdly, form the dough into a round shape, place on a baking stone sprinkle with reserved oats, and put in a cold oven.
- After that, turn the oven to 375-degrees, and leave it alone for an hour.
- Lastly, after an hour, pull the bread out of the oven, let it cool slightly, then tear it apart in chunks like a Viking (or cut it in nice wedges) and drizzle honey on it.
