Black Velvet Tamarind Juice – Due to the extremely high concentration of nutrients and antioxidants in this drink, many people are turning to the exotic alternative of Black Velvet Tamarind Juice to improve their health in a variety of ways.
The fruit of the tamarind tree, a rare legume-bearing tree, is used to make Black Velvet Tamarind Juice. This tree, which is native to Africa’s tropical regions, produces hard brown pods that are around 4-6 inches long and contain tamarind fruit and seeds.

In Nigeria, it has a general name licky licky and called awin (Yoruba), icheku (Igbo), tsamiyar kurm (Hausa) while in Ghana it is called yooyi.
It has a black velvety thin shell that covers a tiny hard seed with an orange “powdery” pulp. The flavor is smooth with a hint of acidity or tartness.
The ascorbic acid, minerals, and sugar content of black velvet tamarind are all high. Between January and May, it ripens seasonally, with a peak yield in March and April.
It’s used in cooking and can be turned into drinks, beverages, jelly, alcoholic beverages, snacks, syrup, and more.
The pulp is usually just licked, but this refreshing drink is a great way to use this fruit. Although they are both leguminous plants, this tamarind is not the same as the other tamarind (Tamarindus indica).
Squeeze the fruit between your fingers to free it from the shell, and the thin shell will break open, exposing the pulp inside.
It takes some time, but it is well worth the effort.
Sugar, jaggery (Mazarkwaila), honey, artificial sweeteners, and other forms of sweeteners may be used, but they are optional. I didn’t use any of them.

How to make Black Velvet Tamarind Juice from 2 Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups shelled tamarind
- 3-4 cups water
Method
- Firstly, shell tamarind and place in a medium bowl.
- Secondly, loosely pound in a mortar
- Then, pour water into it and strain out the juice. Discard the seeds.
- After that, serve chilled or serve over ice. You can also warm it through for a comforting tea.
